The importance f a sustainable environment will be highlighted in coming days with the observance of Environment Day, and Oceans Day throughout this week.
Observed on June 5th, World Environment Day is organized annually by the UN Environment Programme in an effort to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
In 2019 China will host the global World Environment Day celebrations on the theme, ‘Air Pollution’.
Information and Communication Officer within the Department of Fisheries Yvonne Edwin outlined activities being undertaken to mark the observances.
World Oceans Day was proposed during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, by the Government of Canada, as an opportunity to honour, help protect, and conserve the ocean.
The UN officially recognized 8 June as World Oceans Day in December 2008. The Day is coordinated by The Ocean Project, a not-for-profit international community foundation. This year, international observances will be hosted under the theme ‘Gender and the Ocean’.
According to Edwin, activities to mark the event will present the opportunity for participants to positively impact the marine environment.
