World Oceans Day was proposed during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, by the Government of Canada, as an opportunity to honour, help protect, and conserve the ocean.

The UN officially recognized 8 June as World Oceans Day in December 2008. The Day is coordinated by The Ocean Project, a not-for-profit international community foundation. This year, international observances will be hosted under the theme ‘Gender and the Ocean’.

According to Edwin, activities to mark the event will present the opportunity for participants to positively impact the marine environment.
