As St Lucians prepare to observe Emancipation day and the slave sacrifices that have been made one local has called for the honouring of rebel slaves.

Mr John Daniel says the mental fortitude of those who are more commonly known as neg mawon is what led to the freedom of many who were enslaved decades ago.

While lamenting the low key observances of emancipation day, Daniel has urged local historians to map out maroon villages in an effort to educate and sensitize locals on their history.

Pointing to some of the customs and traditions of the maroons, Daniel has also made another suggestion that could add life to the black history observance.

Meanwhile the CDF has been coordination a number of activities to commemorate Emancipation Day. They include an Emancipation Panel Discussion which was held on Saturday 29th July at the Baywalk Mall from 5:00 p.m.
